Top 10 Mother’s Day Gift Ideas

As the second Sunday of May nears, it is time to think of ways to celebrate mothers (even though that is a worthy pursuit any time of the year)!

At Rollo Insurance, we thought it would be fun to give you a little of the history behind Mother’s Day in the United States, as well as a few ideas to honor the special women in all our lives.

Origins of Mother’s Day in the United States

Mother’s Day is celebrated in different forms throughout the world. Anna Jarvis is most often credited for founding Mother’s Day in the United States. According to History.com, “Following her mother’s 1905 death, Anna Jarvis conceived of Mother’s Day as a way of honoring the sacrifices mothers made for their children. After gaining financial backing from a Philadelphia department store owner named John Wanamaker, in May 1908 she organized the first official Mother’s Day celebration at a Methodist church in Grafton, West Virginia. That same day also saw thousands of people attend a Mother’s Day event at one of Wanamaker’s retail stores in Philadelphia.” In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson signed a measure officially establishing the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day.
