History
Beeville was founded in 1859, though the area had been used for ranching and agriculture long before its official establishment. The town was named after Barnard E. Bee, a Confederate general and politician. His father, James B. Bee, was an early settler in the area.
Bee County itself was formed in 1857, with Beeville being chosen as the county seat due to its strategic location. The town grew quickly because of its position along key transportation routes and its potential as an agricultural hub. Beeville became a trading center for local ranchers and farmers, who began to settle in the area in increasing numbers.
Fun Fact
The arrival of World War II brought more changes to Beeville, as it did to much of Texas. During the war, the Beeville Air Force Base (later renamed Naval Air Station Beeville) became an important military installation, providing jobs and boosting the local economy. The base played a role in training pilots and providing military support during the war. After the war, Beeville’s economy began to diversify, and it shifted from an agrarian focus to a more service- and commerce-based economy.After the base was decommissioned in the 1990s, Beeville faced challenges related to the loss of military jobs, but the town has continued to adapt, relying on agriculture, tourism, and small businesses. The Bee County Expo Center, which hosts various events such as rodeos and livestock shows, became a focal point for the community.
