Gilmer, Texas is located along the Old Cherokee Trace, an important trail used by the Cherokee Indians during their travels in the region. This path played a significant role in the movement of Native American tribes in Texas. As a result, the area surrounding Gilmer is rich in Native American artifacts. Additionally, the town is also the birthplace of Eagles band members Don Henley, Johnny Mathis, and Freddie King. Gilmer also has a strong football tradition. The town has produced many talented players, including Jeff Traylor, a former Buckeye player and now the head football coach at UTSA (University of Texas at San Antonio). The Gilmer Buckeyes have won four state championships in football.
