History
Founded in 1854, Stephenville was initially established as a settlement in an area that was still within Comanche territory. This posed significant challenges, as Comanche raids were common during the mid-1800s, making the early years of the town difficult. Stephenville’s growth began after 1871, when railroad construction reached the town. By 1890, the establishment of Tarleton State University further aided the town’s development. Stephenville is still home to the university today.

Stephenville, Texas is known as the "Cowboy Capital of the World" due to its connection to rodeo culture and the Western lifestyle. The town has earned this title because it is home to a large number of professional rodeo cowboys and cowgirls, more than any other place in the world. Additionally, Stephenville is also known as the "City of Champions" as a result of the success of Stephenville High School athletics. The school has a remarkable athletic history, particularly in football, having won 10 State Championships, with 7 of those being in football.
