History
The town of Gatesville was officially founded in 1854 and was named after Isaac Gates, an early settler and landowner in the area. The town was established as a key trading post in the region and quickly became a center for agriculture, particularly cattle ranching and farming.
Fun Fact
The Coryell County Courthouse was built in 1897-98. It was designed by the architect Wesley Clark Dodson, and today it stands as one of the oldest continuously used courthouses in Texas. Also, Gatesville is the Spur Capital of Texas. The Coryell County Museum has over 10,000 spurs in the Mitchell Collection.
