History
Founded in 1882, Bertram, Texas, was born out of the late 19th-century railroad boom. This happened when the nearby settlement of San Gabriel packed up and relocated two miles northwest to meet the newly constructed Austin and Northwestern Railroad. The town is named after Rudolph Bertram, an Austin merchant and the railroad’s primary stockholder. The town quickly flourished as a vital Hill Country shipping hub for cotton, cattle, and wool, culminating in a record-breaking 11,624 bales of cotton ginned here in 1928. Today, it stands as a resilient, thriving community that perfectly balances its historic railroad roots with a warm, welcoming Texas spirit.
Fun Fact
Bertram is home to the historic downtown Globe Theatre. This is not just a regular brick theatre; its striking walls were built in 1935 using the same type of Texas pink granite used to construct the State Capitol building in Austin and the Galveston Seawall. Also, the famous Major League Baseball player, John Owen "Chief" Wilson, lived out his post-baseball life in Bertram. Playing in the early 1900s, he still holds the all-time MLB single-season record for the most triples (36 in a single year, set in 1912). This is a baseball record that has remained with Wilson for over a century!
