History
Austin was originally a tiny village named Waterloo when it was founded in 1837. However, it was renamed in 1839 to honor Stephen F. Austin, the “Father of Texas,” when it was chosen as the new capital. Austin is also home to the Texas State Capitol. This was completed in 1888 and stands 302.64 feet tall, intentionally taller than the U.S. Capitol building, which stands at 288 feet. It is the largest state capitol building in the United States by total square footage.
Fun Fact
Austin hosts North America's largest urban bat colony, with an estimated 1.5 million Mexican free-tailed bats roosting under the Ann W. Richards Congress Avenue Bridge from March to October. The sunset emergence of the bats has become one of Austin's top tourist attractions, drawing over 100,000 spectators each year.
