Choosing Health Insurance That Fits Your Life

Navigating health insurance can sometimes feel overwhelming. But understanding your options is important to protect both your health and your budget. If you’re looking for coverage just for yourself or your family, separate from an employer plan, individual health insurance might be the right choice. At Rollo Insurance, we help Texans explore what’s available and find a plan that fits their unique situation.

What Types of Health Insurance Plans Are Available?

There are two main types of health plans: Fee-for-Service and Managed Care. Both generally cover hospital stays, doctor visits, surgeries, and often prescription drugs. Some plans even include dental benefits.

Fee-for-Service Plans
With these plans, you usually pay for each medical service as it happens. You can often see any doctor you want. Either you or your doctor will submit claims for reimbursement.

Managed Care Plans
Managed care plans come in different forms, such as:

  • Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs): You pick a primary care doctor who coordinates your care and refers you to specialists. You typically need to stay within the plan’s network of providers.

  • Preferred Provider Organizations (PPOs): You have a network but can also see doctors outside it, usually at a higher cost. Referrals are usually not required.

  • Point-of-Service (POS) Plans: These combine features of HMOs and PPOs. You select a primary care doctor and can go outside the network for some services.

Managed care plans often encourage you to use providers in their network to keep costs lower.

What Is Long-Term Care?

Sometimes, people need help with everyday tasks such as eating, dressing, or moving around because of illness, injury, or aging. This type of assistance is called long-term care. It might happen in your home, an assisted living facility, or a nursing home. Long-term care usually involves help with basic activities, not medical treatment. That distinction matters because Medicare and most health insurance plans generally cover medical care, not long-term custodial care.

Understanding Disability Insurance

Disability insurance provides income if an injury or illness prevents you from working. There are two types:

  • Short-Term Disability covers you for a limited time, often up to two years, with benefits starting after a short waiting period.

  • Long-Term Disability starts after a longer waiting period and can provide benefits for many years or even for life.

These policies often include features like guaranteed renewal, meaning your coverage won’t be canceled as long as you pay premiums. Some options let you increase coverage later, adjust benefits for inflation, or receive partial benefits if you can work part-time.
